This is a small oil painting of a plush toy of Stitch from the movie "Lilo and Stitch" playing with a ceramic egg vase I made but well just call it a rocket ship for fun :)

This was a class project which I enjoyed working on. I loved the challenge with reflections and transparent glass. The more challenging the art piece the better.

Wise words of the month...

I forgot to post last month so I'll make up for it by posting a nice paragraph which I read in a book recomended by my Critical Reasoning teacher. Mr. Grant.

The name of the book is "The Courage to Create" by: Rollo May.

On Chapter 4 section 5 the author states the folowing which is so true...

"Creative people, as I see them, are distinguished by the fact that they can live with anxiety, even though a high price may be paid in therms if insecurity, sensitivity, and defenselessness for the gift of the "divine madness," to borrow the term used by the classical Greeks. They do not run away from non-being, but by encountering and wrestling with it, force it to produce being. They knock on silence for an answering music; they pursue meaninglessness until they can force it to mean.*

On that note I believe some artwork is in order since I have yet to post anything for a month :)

In college this year I am taking 2 Maya classes and one 3DS Max class. In my 3DS Max class the assignment is to create a creature then map a texture to it. After that insert bones into the creature and assign the bones a weight and proper movement. After that do a simple animation. So far the modeling aspect wasn't that hard, but the UV side of it is a bit confusing for me. Maya is far easier for me to understand even though my Game Art instructor says that Maya is harder and 3DS Max is easier. In any case I am learning but there is a curve I must iron out. But with time I will gain a mastery of both programs but not in one year, it will take time and determination to learn the programs fully in order to successfully stand out in a group to where I can get a career job by the time I graduate in 3 years.

One thing I have learned over time is that if you want to succeed at something you must not just practice once in a while but every day even if its for a couple hours. Keep practicing and you will see an improvement happen not gradually but drastically happen if you push yourself. Study books, practice the programs and techniques and you will succeed.

To be honest... I really need to take my own advice "grins" :)

Well actually Birthday but I like the sound of the other one better.
I just turned 32 on January 21st. Man what a long day... I swear whenever a birthday comes around it makes you feel twice your age. Im just glad its done and gone cause it was a very quiet house. My dad is in Northern California and Mom is in Oregon. Im down here in Laguna Hills, CA. and attending college so i was all on my lonesome. The only pluss side was that my room mate treated me to a tri tip steak for dinner. Thanks bro :)

On the art end of things I have been studying "Maya & 3DS Max" Great programs and I seem to be taking to them pretty quickly. My "Maya" teacher gives homework but I always seem to finish it before class is out. :)

On annother note, my other classes are great and I really have to get a laptop for my Critical Reasoning and my Perspective Class. I hope when I get enough saved up I can get one that can handle my college work load.

Holidays and College Finals

Wow talking about crunch time for the holidays. I have one week left and lots of studying to do but so far everything is going well. My teachers are great and I would like to personally introduce each of them here.

Daniel Von der Ahe: Drawing, Color and Comp - Good teacher, had a rough start this semester but he got the hang of teaching with some of my advice ;)
Matt Frantz: Photoshop - Good teacher, great personality, and knows his stuff!
Thomas Stubbs: Figure Drawing - Great teacher, love his lectures! Very knowledgeable on anatomy!
Nocole Hartshorn: Art History - Great teacher, very nice and understanding.
Mike Stice: English - Good teacher, great personality, very tough on the grades but knows his stuff!

Outside of that I would like to say that I cant wait till this semester is over so I can rest and relax for a little bit. I will see if I can get my job to give me 40 hours a week till the beginning of next semester. I need the money to get a laptop for the CGI classes. Right now I am borrowing a laptop from the people I am renting from. They are very nice people and I am glad they helped me out with this loaner but I need to get my own for next semester, especially one that can handle rendering in Maya. Im thinking "ASUS" or "Alienware". I actually heard that "Alienware" was bought out by "Dell" now thats surprising O..O.

I'm guessing you guys want to see some of what I have done in class so I might as well post it. What you will see are 3 oil paintings all are class assignments on reproducing a masters paintings. I also have annother piece that is a charcoal drawing of a still life which was a plaster cast.

HappyHalloween everybody! Ok so im late by a few hours, bite me! This is my one and only favorite holiday :D
I can remove this annoying costume that looks like a human and reveal myself as what I truly am LOL

Oh and a friend of mine who is also a sculptor entered the costume contest and we both tied at 2nd place. I couldn't have been more thrilled to be tied with her. She is so freaking talented, smart and very easy on the eyes. :) I am very glad to call her my friend. It seems hard to find people with similar interests and goals. Dare I say she might be a kindred spirit? I hope I am not using the wrong words here, but in any case I was very happy that day.

Oh I also entered the pumpkin carving contest and to my utter delight I won 1st place! The design came from the fact I was appearing in my dragon form at the college costume contest so why not make the pumpkin a dragon? So I designed one in my sketchbook and when I was happy with it I drew it on the pumpkin. Well after carving the pumpkin I decided to make the lid be the base and traced my dragon hand and cut out the lid. So I guess it does help to have a theme for your contest entries :)

Dinosaurs Are Loose! Run!

Actually don't run away, run to them. They are friendly! They are the biggest most wonderful creatures this earth has known and they were giants of their time. Reptiles that lived over 65 million years ago and still live today as birds or in some other reptilian or birdlike form.

"James Gurney" has been my favorite Author and Artist since I was a little kid when his book came out. Ever since then I have wanted to go to "Dinotopia" and live with the dinosaurs and experience the festivities of that world. And you know what? I have! In some ways I have. Go to a renaissance fair where your thrown back in time with the wonderful music and the fun games going on everywhere. Thats how "Dinotopia" is to me. A festive place where you can always have fun and you can find treasures that the merchants have hand made. Now sure theres no Dinosaurs there but you can leave that to the imagination.

I was lucky enough to actually meet "James Gurney" this Monday. I have all his books and over half of his prints that hes produced which are signed and numbered. My books on the other hand weren't signed so I brought all of them. Over 14 books along with a Dinotopia Calendar, Prehistoric Times Magazine and Smithsonian Magazine which he signed. I recorded the entire session on digital recorder too. It was great to finally meet the artist who created a world that not only brought me uncountable hours worth of wonder and happiness but also who has kept me from going into deep depression when my parents divorced. It wasn't pretty, trust me... I only had My Dinotopia books to keep me company at the time as well as some dinosaur science books.

After all the books were signed and he left I prepared for class and realized OMFG!!! My camera! It was still in my pants pocket! I wear cargo pants so lots of pockets LOL. I darted out the class room and met Mr. Gurney right outside of the Gallery. We got our picture taken. I swear this was one of the best days of my life. And I've had a few =)

On another note, I would like to bring attention to one hell of an artist who's work caught my eyes the first day I arrived at the college. His illustrations are amazing! Also, like myself, we both enjoy dinosaurs and nature as the subject matter. His name is "Jon Kuo" and his blog can be found here http://jonnadon.blogspot.com/ Check his work out. I promise you, you wont be disappointed!
I do have some bad news though... I'm a freshmen and hes a Senior so when he graduates He will have gone and I'm then the only dinosaur artist at the college. I would love to team up one day and we could make a wicked book or game. Heh... oh well ya never know...
